Chang Gung University's Story

The Evolution of the University and the Concept of Running the University

The Evolution

After Mr. Wang Yung-ching and his brother Mr. Wang Yung-zai, the founders of the Formosa Plastics Group, established Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in memory of their father Mr. Wang Chang-gung, they continued their mission to help Taiwan improve the medical quality and standards as well as to find a solution to the shortage of Taiwan’s medical professionals. Therefore, they established Chang Gung Medical College in April, 1987. In order to meet the needs of Taiwan’s economic development, Chang Gung Medical College incorporated the College of Engineering and the College of Management to provide comprehensive teaching and research programs in the fields of medicine, engineering, and management. The school expanded and in 1993 changed its name to Chang Gung College of Medicine and Technology. In August 1997, Chang Gung College of Medicine and Technology was approved by the Ministry of Education to be re-named as Chang Gung University.

The Philosophy of Running the University

The University is rooted in the educational philosophy "Diligence, Perseverance, Frugality, and Trustworthiness", "Holistic Education" and "Combination of Theory and Practice" of Mr. Wang Yung-ching, the founder of the University.
