Abstract

Background and Purposes: The aims of this study are to (1) evaluate the outcome of secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) and its predictors, (2) compare primary gingivoperiosteoplasty (PGPP) with SABG outcomes, (3) evaluate the changes of the graft after SABG with time, and (4) evaluate the periodontal outcomes and root condition of cleft-adjacent teeth after orthodontic treatment Design: Prospective cohort studies and clinical series. Setting: University hospital craniofacial center and dental department. Patients: We plan to recruit 30 children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) (age: 9-11 years) who had PGPP (PGPP group), 60 children with UCLP (age: 9-11 years) who had SABG 6 months ago (SABG group), and 90 children with UCLP (age: 11-14 years) who had PGPP or SABG before and is ready for evaluation of full fixed orthodontic treatment (FO group). Interventions: FO treatment using light continuous forces for FO group patients who are indicated and willing to. Measurements: All patients undergo 2D periapical and occlusal radiography, and 3D cone beam CT at 1 to 3 time points. FO group patients also undergo 3 periodontal evaluations of the cleft-adjacent teeth and their contralateral teeth: before FO treatment, at the end of FO treatment, and at 1 year follow-up. Data Analysis: Multiple linear regression, independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and generalized estimating equations (GEE) are used when indicated. Statistical significance is assumed for a p value of less than 0.05.
