Abstract

Pediatric asthma is one of the nation’s most common and costly diseases in Taiwan. The severity of asthma and cost of medical care can be managed with appropriate medical treatment, education, and environmental modification. Non-adherence problems in children and adolescents with asthma children are as serious as those among adult patients. This proposal is proposed a 2 stages of study. In the first stage we will conduct an assessment to identify the current condition of non-adherence in pediatric asthmatic patients. In the second stage we will conduct a randomized clinical trial of a nurse and physician designed nursing intervention to be developed from the data gathered in the first stage of this study. Then, a randomized clinical trail will be conducted to administer patients to either Advice group or Advice plus Counseling group interventions at baseline, 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month followed. Patients will be assessed the effectiveness of two groups (Advice, Advice plus Counseling) at 4 time points (at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-months) for treatment adherence behaviors in a primary care medical settings. Data collected in Stage I study will be served as the Control group.
