Abstract
In 2009, the author has proposed a periodically-loaded coupled line to realize a novel
trans-directional coupled-line coupler. Due to the separation of input and output ports, the
crossover issues faced by contradirectional couplers can be avoided and DC blocking is easy
to be achieved between the input and output ports since they are on different lines. Therefore,
it is easier to connect to active devices. The purpose of this proposal is to extend our work in
periodically-loaded coupled-lines. The general analysis of parallel coupled-lines is derived.
The formulation of the periodically-loaded parallel coupled-lines is also given by Bloch
mode theory. The advantage of trans-directional coupled-line couplers are utilized to design
Marchand baluns, Butler matrices and reflection type phase shifters. Other applications of
periodically-loaded coupled-lines are also given.
