Abstract
Background: Nearly one million people die each year in the world. The effectiveness of interventions at the individual level in suicide prevention is still unsatisfactory, and the research on the mechanism of suicide at the individual level remains to be investigated. Objective: To examine whether gut bacteria and related leakage gut blood factors are associated with suicidal ideation and depression by comparing the differences between different groups of depressed patients with or without suicidal ideation and healthy controls. Methods: This study is a case-control study. 50 patients with major depression and suicidal ideation is recruited from a regional teaching hospital. Two compared group included 50 patients with "major depression but no suicidal ideation" and 50 "control groups without major depression and no suicidal ideation". All participants completed structured assessment (including mental illness, personality, impulsivity, suicidal ideation, and depression) , as well as collection of fecal intestinal microbiota、blood leakage gut factors, and MRI brain imaging. Importance: This study will be the first to investigate the correlation between microbiota and related leakage gut factors with suicide ideation. The results will provide a new direction for suicide causes and future suicide prevention and treatment.
