Abstract
Metaphor is an important approach in interaction design. It uses a vehicle to carry a similar concept from
another commonly unrelated topic to facilitate understanding. In graphic user interface (GUI), it is widely
utilized as a basic design method. The goal of tangible user interface (TUI) is to connect the digital and
physical space. It also utilizes metaphor to facilitate the perceptual and representational abilities of human
being.
Previously the researcher has developed an information space navigation system with tangible user interface.
To compare the effects of metaphor between TUI and GUI, it utilized a common noun metaphor. This
research will focus on verb metaphor and behavior metaphor to re-develop the tangible user interface with
different sensors and control mechanism. The user experience and design guidelines will be investigated.
To promote the total usability and user experience, this research will utilize behavior metaphor for tangible
interaction design to develop an information navigation system. The total usability and use motivation will
be evaluated and compared. This research will use interactive media software/hardware to make the tangible
interactive interface, such as interactive authoring application, tangible objects, sensors, controller, and
display. In settings of different metaphors, interface operating tasks will be given to participants. The data of
user performance and errors will be collected. Subjected usability, satisfaction, and use motivation will be
evaluated by questionnaires. All data from factors will be analyzed and compared to understand the user
experience characteristics of different metaphors and to conclude the appropriate interaction design
guidelines.
