Abstract
Truth-telling of cancer is an important clinical practice; however, it is rarely mentioned in
medical education. Many ethical difficulties and medical disputes are involved in truth-telling. As
motivated by this issue, this integrated project aims to construct and test localized truth-telling
model, in order to develop an educational model for truth-telling of cancer, which can be applied to
medical education and advanced nursing education in Taiwan. This project adopts different learning
methods (experts’ lectures and self-learning), and tests the effectiveness of different learning
methods on enhancement of truth-telling quality. The researcher invites the experts of medicine,
nursing and information engineering for collaboration, and designs three sub-projects to accomplish
the objectives of the integrated project.
The theme of the sub-project is construction and test of localized truth-telling educational
model for advanced practice nurses (APNs). The 3-year project will treat APNs from different
medical institutes as subjects, and collected data. Through the triangulation method, this project
accomplishes the goals of each year. In the first year, the purpose is to develop appropriate
truth-telling educational model for APNs. The qualitative research method of in-depth interview is
adopted. The objective in the second year is to investigate APNs’ intention to participate in
truth-telling education and related factors. The researcher will collect related data by structural
questionnaire. In the third year, the objective is to test the effectiveness of communication skill
training (CST) on enhancement of APNs’ truth-telling ability. Experimental study will be conducted.
The findings can serve as a reference for APNs’ formal and in-service education, lower the patients
and relatives’ emotional obstacles due to inappropriate truth-telling, and enhance the quality of
truth-telling and overall cancer care.
