Abstract

Medical ultrasound industry in Taiwan, due to the lack of IP right, lacks of in-house key component production, and industrial involvement, faces challenging obstacles and leads to higher order core technologies such as ultrasound medical equipment cannot be established and now mainly relies on imports. However, the opportunity should be exist once the industry, government, and academic can invest and integrate resource on key technology, continued consolidation of research and development to improve the current state on medical electronics and medical devices (such as medical ultrasound) to truly transform to industry. The purpose of this 4-year project is to propose the establishment of medical ultrasonic research center that fuse the RD energy from academic (Chang-Gung Universityand) and industry (Chang-Gung Medical Technology Inc.), to deepen the core technology (particularly on ultrasound circuit design and its corresponding VLSI chip design), core IP keeping and technical transfer, resource center establishment, as well as personnel training . Three key technology to be built is: (1) Core medical ultrasound electronic circuit deisgn, (2) high frequency ultrasound electronic circuit deisgn, and (3) medical ultrasonics ASIC and IC chip design. The following endpoints will be met after executing this project: (1) to develop the multidisciplinary skills required for medical electronics RDs, (2) RD establishment of high-end medical ultrasound medical electronic products of key technologies, (3) Biomedical Electronics product verification system, (4) to create a RD center of high-end medical ultrasound medical electronics, (5) application/market-oriented circuit design and integration, (6) VLSI chip design, (7) Core laboratory, and also includes: (8) Core circuit-designed IP establishment, (9) program/ curriculum improvement, and (10) personnel training. We expected that core electronic circuit and chip technology on medical ultrasonics can be built and IPs can be kept, following with the IPs transferred into industry, actually occurred after the execution of the plan, and finally have contribution on improving health care quality and reduce the cost of health insurance health care in Taiwan.
