Abstract

The global telecommunications industry is evolving more quickly than ever in the development of 5G technology. ITU plans to spread 5G to commercial application fields in 2020. This project develops two switched multi-beam 38 GHz phase array antennas with planar structure, high antenna gain, switched beams, and low side lobe level, which are useful for 5G communication systems. The research of 5G has become attractive topic in both Taiwan and overseas, therefore this project possesses very important value for 5G applications and also promote the related technology development for Taiwan communications industry. The goals of this two-year project are abstracted as follows. In the first-year research, a beam-switched 38 GHz phase array antenna with high gain will be designed, which includes four important topics: (1) design of 110 slot-coupled series-fed patch subarray with high gain, (2) design of vertically stacked SIW 48 Butler matrix, (3) design of absorptive SP4T switch and integration with Butler matrix, and (4) constructing 810 phase array antenna with high gain and switched beams. The research achievement can obtain high gain, switched four beams, miniaturized Butler matrix, and integrated SP4T switch. In the second-year research, a 38 GHz phase array antenna with low side lobe, low scan loss, and switched 24 beams will be designed, which includes also four important topics: (1) design of series-fed patch element with wide beamwidth, (2) design of two-dimensional eight-beam antenna using SIW 88 Butler matrix, (3) patch elements and SIW feed lines with tapered current distribution, and (4) constructing phase array antenna with low side lobe and switched 24 beams. The research achievement can obtain low scan loss, low side lobe, two-dimensional beam steering, and switched 24 beams with 360 coverage.
