Abstract
Design of Tangible User Interface for Navigation in Information Space
The elements of contents and the connections among elements form information space
similar to physical space in concept. Navigation is a similar problem in information space
like in physical space. It is about how to decide and move to the target in the space. The goal
of tangible user interface (TUI) is to connect the digital and physical space. It utilizes the
foreground and background (environment) perceptual and representational abilities as the
interactive interface between human and information space. It improves the understanding
and control to abstract information space. Navigation in information space would get help
from TUI.
This research will take the total acceptance of the information space navigation system as
criteria to develop a system with TUI. From the process of exploration and testing, the
appropriate TUIs are evaluated and discussed. The result is an interactive device or
installation to display and navigate information from museums or shops that provide
contents.
This research consists of two stages. The aim of the first stage is to establish appropriate
model of navigation in information space. The user study utilizes protocol analysis to collect
and analyze data to understand the user needs and experience. Then system analysis sets the
system input and output from user need. System design will focus on the innovative
interaction and metaphor representation. The aim of the second stage is to make and evaluate
the system with TUI. The system is to be made with interactive authoring software, sensors
and micro-controllers. Its acceptance will be tested and evaluated with TAM. The design
guideline and suggestion of the TUI would be proposed from the observation and testing of
factors.
