Diabetes and Risk of Pulmonary Disease, Alzheimer’S Disease, and Parkinson’S Disease: a Prospective Follow-Up Study

Abstract

Diabetic population increased annually in Taiwan as the global trend. Chronic complications of diabetes, consume considerable medical resources, but also affect the patients quality of life. Chronic complications of diabetes, such as Macrovascular and microvascular complications have been extensively studied, but few studies on pulmonary disease. The lung is a target organ of diabetic microangiopathy. Ehrlich et al. find that diabetes patients have higher risk of several pulmonary conditions (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, and pneumonia) than non-diabetic subjects. Diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, are common chronic disease in the elderly. Since the elderly population is increasing in Taiwan, these diseases will be rapidly growing and becoming important public health issues. Given the limited number of studies, no conclusive evidence shows that diabetes is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Currently very little is known about the implication of diabetes for pulmonary diseases and neurodegenerative diseases, especially in Taiwan. Therefore, additional research is warranted to further explore the possible implications of diabetes for the pulmonary diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. A nationwide, population-based prospective follow-up study was conducted, and the claim data of National Health Insurance database of Taiwan in 2000 and 2005 were collected to explore the relationship between diabetes and pulmonary diseases and . We also applied a propensity score matching to correct for sample selection bias due to observable differences between the target and comparison groups.
