Abstract

Recently, adoption of high-priced medicines that leads to increasing health care costs has become an important issue. However, little is known regarding how reimbursement of a drug affects patients’ choice of treatments, short-term and long-term treatment patterns, outcomes, and use and costs of health services. Therefore, this study aims to examine the dynamic impact of adopting a new treatment option on treatment patterns, outcomes, and use and costs of health services by using cases of targeted therapies reimbursed for non-small-cell lung cancer and female breast cancer, and biologic disease-modified anti-rheumatic drugs for rheumatoid arthritis. The subjects of this study and their use and costs of medical care will be selected and collected from national-level data sets such as the Cancer Registry Database and the National Health Insurance claims data obtained from the Health and Welfare Data Science Center, Ministry of Health and Welfare (HWDC, MOHW). The findings of this study will be of help to understand the short-term and long-term treatment patterns, outcomes, and use and costs of health services for specific disease groups. The findings of this study will be of help as information source for cost-effectiveness analysis and budget impact analysis
