Abstract

Design is one of the important capabilities of enterprise innovation. With the rapid changes in society, economy, and technology, the range of design issues are becoming more and more complex. It urges to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge and technologies to achieve a holistic synthesis, which addresses the importance of interdisciplinary education. Design students often encounter many learning problems during their studies. When it comes to interdisciplinary education, students are further challenged to be equipped with interdisciplinary expertise, collaborating with students and teachers from different backgrounds beyond the growing complexity of design issues. The main purpose of this study is to explore the learning problems that design students encounter in design-based interdisciplinary education and the learning resources they use to overcome such problems, even the reasons for the learning problems. This study will take two years, both qualitative and quantitative methods will be used, and divide into two stages. In the first stage, the focus group interview will use to collect the data to identify and classify the learning problems and learning resources. The data will be coded and analyzed by ground theory. Then the framework and model of the learning problems and resources on design-based interdisciplinary education will be constructed. In the second stage, the questionnaire will be designed according to the framework and model constructed in the first stage. Then the formal questionnaire survey will be conducted to collect the mass data to verify and modify the framework and model. The results can increase the understanding of the learning process of students on design-based interdisciplinary education, and provide the reference for teaching planning and the setting of the learning resources in design education.
