Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major individual and public health problem. It is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the worldwide according to a study published by World Health Organization, and is ranked eleventh leading cause of death in Taiwan. These data may be underestimated. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is not a fully irreversible disease. Effective management should be aimed at supportive care and self-management. The research project will be constructed in 2 years. PRECEDE-PROCEED model will guide research process. The purpose of this study is aimed to understand the needs and related factors of self-management about COPD patients, and develop the self-management education program. Qualitative study is used in first year. The second year, the purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of the self-management education program. Qusai-experimental research design is used in this year in order to compare the differences of outcome variables between experimental and control groups.
