Abstract
The traditional craft approach has been always based on the master handcraft, dealing only one after
another. It is far different from the latest production process which developed from complex
technological advances. However, the human in some degree still favor in craft objects due to their
familiar and nature materials which trigger the sense of comfort. The primary aim of this project is
to achieve an open-minded craft perspective through understanding craft material processing as well
as the modular approach of product design developments. Utilizing the modular approach, it is
possible to develop craft concepts in the same method as product designs and to evaluate the
potential of fusing technology into craft designs. This overall design goal is set up for a two years
research plan. The first year of this project will focus on the possibility of developing modularized
craft productions through researching the molding process in order to find out a good approach for
fusing technologies into craft. The model of craft modularization provides a clear design process in
3 stages. (Hsieh & Browne, 2016) Stage 1, the material treatment and process. Stage 2, Smart &
technology product design concept. And stage 3, the design integration and evaluation. The
second year of this project aims to transfer the modular process procedure into the engineering
procedure in order to achieve small-size production. Therefore, all first year design results need to
be evaluated and refined according to engineering requirements for small-size production.
Hopefully, through this well-concern process and the careful evaluation, we are able to complete 2-3
sets of smart craft design.
