Abstract

Oxygen is the widespread using gas in medical and industrial applications. For medical oxygen supply demand, the handy oxygen mask becomes potential device to be used for special environments and hospital. In industrial, there are several options to produce oxygen, such as membrane separation, water electrolysis, etc. There are some disadvantages on convenience or safety of current available technology so that no handy equipments are available. In this thesis, we use the concept of electrochemical oxygen reduction (ORR) to react oxygen in the air while nitrogen is the inert gas in electrochemical reaction. The oxygen reduction cathode and a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) are used in the design of the oxygen concentrator. A gas diffusion cathode (GDE) used for the oxygen reduction reaction. GDE is good for promoting reactants mass transfer due to porous structure which may diminish the limit of mass transfer. Transition metal oxide is stable in anodic process for oxygen evolution and is used for DSA. For practical application, production of 5 liters oxygen per minute in a square of meter electrode area is required to medical. For the requirement of the both electrode, its current density must reach as 150 mA/cm2.
