Abstract
Title: The correlation between intra-operative biomechanics and post-operative stability in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery
Background and Purpose: Of patients after orthognathic surgery, the biomechanics generated by musculoskeleton and occlusion has been considered one of the key factors to the maxillomandibular skeletal stability. Majority of biomechanical studies have been conducted in vitro or by using finite element analysis to avoid unwanted side effect on human subjects. In vivo, a small number of reports available were performed on animal subjects. The purpose of this study is to study the correlation between intraoperative biomechanics measurements and postoperative skeletal stability in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.
Patients and Methods: This is a prospective case control study. Fifty patients will be recruited in each group of patients. For the three groups of Class III, Class II and Anterior open bite, totally one hundred and fifty subjects will be recruited. Intraoperative measurement of skeletal movements and biomechanical force will be taken. Fixation will be performed by plates and screws. Two or three-dimensional cephalometric radiographies will be collected to record the skeletal and soft tissue changes. The timing of image collection will be before surgery, two weeks and half an years after surgery, and at the end of treatment (between one to two years after surgery).
