    Abstract

From the field’s feedback, the coal composition affects the flow behavior of coals, products of gasification, temperature distribution inside a pulverized-coal (PC) boiler and hence the boiler’s efficiency. In this project, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to study the effects of coal compositions on the coal powder hydrodynamics and temperature distributions in a PC boiler. The homogenous gasification reactions and the heterogeneous carbon combustion reactions are considered. The finite-rate/eddy-dissipation method is used for the Eulerian-Lagrangian turbulent flow and reaction coupling. The ratio between the secondary air to the over-fire air will be numerically justified to compensate the influences of the coal composition changing.
