Abstract
For parents, parenting school age children with type 1 diabetes involves continuous
planning various area associated with diabetes management to achieve the major goal of
maintaining blood sugar in normal range. Parenting style is more likely than parent-child
relationship to predict the effectiveness of blood sugar control. However, exploration of
parenting experience and factors associated with parenting style among parents of
school-aged children with type 1 diabetes have been less addressed. Parenting style is also
influenced by social context. This study composes of two phases. In the first phase, we will
use a triangulation study design with qualitative (including individual interview) and
quantitative (questionnaire) to understand parents’ experiences of parenting school-aged
children with type 1 diabetes, and to develop the questionnaire of parenting style for
school-aged children with type 1 diabetes. In the second phase, we will conduct a qualitative
research design to examine the association of parenting style with metabolic control,
adherence, and quality of life among school-aged children with type 1 diabetes.
We expect the results of this study provide measures and evaluation of parents parenting
style for children with type 1 diabetes. Healthcare providers are expected to be benefit from
obtaining guidance to instruct parents about effective parenting so that children’s blood
sugar level and quality of life can be promoted.
