The Influence of Parenting Style on Metabolic Control and Quality of Life in School-Age Children with Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes---A Longitudinal Study

For parents, parenting school-aged children with type 1 diabetes involves various and continuous plan regarding diabetes management to maintain blood sugar in normal range. Parenting styles play important roles in caring for children with type 1 diabetes. Therefore, the purposes of this longitudinal study are to explore (1) the effects of parenting styles on children’s metabolic control and their quality of life in a 24-month follow-up, (2) compare the differences in parenting styles and children's quality of life between the study and comparison groups, and (3) the changes of parenting styles, children’s metabolic control, and children’s quality of life at diagnosis and in a 24-month follow-up. Children with type 1 diabetes aged 6 to 12 years and their mothers will be recruited as the study group. In addition, children without type 1 diabetes and their mothers will be recruited as the comparison group. Further, the ages and genders of the children in the comparison group and their mothers’ ages will be matched with the children and their mothers in the study group. Each participant will be assessed 7 times: at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months after getting the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. The instruments include the parenting style questionnaire, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0, Peds QL 3.0 Diabetes Module, as well as the value of HbA1c. The statistic analyses will include generalized estimating equation, hierarchical linear modeling, and repeat measurement modeling. This study’s results can generate information that health care providers can use to provide family-centered practice and evidence-based interventions, which may improve the quality of care for children with type 1 diabetes.
