Abstract

The population of patients with dementia is gradually increasing every year in Taiwan. This trend not only implicates the basic ability of patients for daily life and emotion but also heavily burdens the social resources. Nowadays, it is only possible for patients to control and alleviate the syndrome of dementia by different kinds of therapies such as music therapy. However, although music therapy has been proven the effectiveness on dementia, the current one has no qualified biofeedback to show the responses of patients during the music therapy. Therefore, this project aims to develop and manufacture an EEG-BCI music player- Harmony- to discuss the response of EEG of patient with dementia toward music in order to ease the patients, assist the therapists and decrease the burdens of caregivers. For these achievements, according to the result of assessment of workability in the first year, we will focus on the development of low energy consumption of EEG acquisition system for long term recording in engineering aspect; design user-friendly BCI interface for therapists and caregivers and develop long-term-used wearable system fitting with ergonomics in design aspect; finally, validate the Harmony system with healthy people to verify the workability and usability.
