Abstract
Recently, the wireless access bandwidth has been significantly increasing because of the wide deployment of 4G wireless cellular networks. Hence, using smart phones or pads to surf the Internet has become a very popular behavior. Most of the traffic in mobile networks comes from the social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, and Line that are named Diverse Data Applications (DDA). Relative to the rapid development of technologies in mobile networks, handheld devices, and multimedia applications, the battery technology for handheld devices does not progress significantly. Hence, the battery lifetime of smart phones becomes a serious problem to users. Users need to charge the batteries of smart phones frequently. It incurs extra energy consumption and inconvenience for users. Accordingly, how to reduce the power consumption of smart phones has been becoming a hot research topic in recent years. To reduce the power consumption of smart phones, 3GPP has worked out the DRX (Discontinuous Reception) power saving mechanism for LTE/LTE-A networks. However, the issue concerning about the optimal setting of DRX parameters is not discussed at all. Since multimedia streaming and mobile IPTV applications are the most power-consuming applications in smart phones, how to design a power saving mechanism to support the Video-on-Demand, mobile IPTV, and DDA applications is an important task. Consequently, this proposal intends to apply the time slicing concept to the design of an efficient power saving mechanism for LTE-A networks, and optimize the DRX parameters in the power saving mechanism.
