Abstract
A carboxylated polybenzimidazole derivative includes a repeating unit represented by formula (I) or (II), wherein each substituent of formula (I) or (II) is defined in the specification or claim. The carboxylated polybenzimidazole derivative of this invention can be dissolved in various organic solvents and is beneficial to follow-up processing. In one example, G is a group containing a carboxylic acid end group or a carboxylated end group. In another embodiment, X1 is a tetravalent aromatic group including two phenyl groups, each of said phenyl groups being bonded with the nitrogen atoms in formula (II) to form a benzimidazole ring, R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen or -(C-O)-G, with the proviso that, in said repeating units of said carboxylic polybenzimidazole, at least one of R1 or R2is -(C-O)-G, wherein G is -Z-COOM, Z being a C2 to C22 divalent aliphatic group, M being selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lithium, sodium, potassium, and ammonium; Y1 is a single bond, a C2 to C20 divalent aromatic group, a C2 to C20 divalent aliphatic group, or a C2 to C20 divalent alicyclic group, and n1 is an integer ranging from 10 to 1000.
