Abstract

In this paper, we report a method for obtaining low multiple optical carrier interference noise in a broadband passive optical network (BPON). The technique for reducing the optical interference involves a laser diode at each subscriber loop with strong sine wave modulation. The results show that the optical interference can be reduced to a low level even when the spectra of all the optical sources overlap. Other significant experimental results are as follows. (1) The end-to-end optical power budget of a network for bidirectional transmission is as high as 24.45 dB when three upstream signals are transmitted. (2) The network can be extended to at least 20 optical network units (ONUs).
