Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a design methodology for the configuration synthesis of machining centres with tool change mechanisms to meet required topology and motion requirements. This methodology is computerized and the machining centres with tool change mechanisms of up to ten links are synthesized. As the result the minimum number of links of the mechanism of machining centres is 8 and the numbers of configurations of machining centres with 8, 9 and 10 links are 75, 331 and 793, respectively. Furthermore, this work provides a systematic approach for synthesizing spatial open-type mechanisms with motion requirements.
