Abstract
From 3 August to 12 December 1994, we experienced an outbreak of nine cases of Candida parapsilosis fungaemia in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The patients involved were premature infants who had received hyperalimentation, broad-spectrum antibiotics and central venous catheterisation prior to the outbreak. Following a strict requirement for handwashing for all persons who entered the NICU, the outbreak was ultimately controlled. An epidemiological survey showed that the outbreak was spread from person to person. Handwashing cannot be emphasised enough in the prevention and eradication of such nosocomial outbreaks.
