Abstract

The elliptic tube bundle has the advantage of lower pressure drop on the air side as compared with the circular tube bundle, and hence can improve the efficiency of heat exchangers. This manuscript presents the numerical simulation results of the air flow of elliptic and circular tube bundles, and compares the pressure drop and total heat flux of elliptic tube (axis ratio = 0.5) bundles with flow angles of attack ranging from 0 to 90 degree. The results show that, increasing the angle of attack results in the increment of the vortex formed behind the tube. Consequently, the heat transfer, temperature variation, and the pressure drop also increases. At zero angle of attack, the j/f of elliptic tube bundle is 2.7 to 3.6 times circular tube bundle.
