Abstract
In the continued quest for high performance, high temperature, and light weight materials, the research and development of rigid rod PBO polymer fiber has been a significant step. The thermal stability, specific stiffness, and specific strength of PBO fiber surpass those of many organic and inorganic fibers. It is therefore important to investigate and integrate this advanced fiber system into high performance composites. Several fiber surface treatment processes have been investigated to improve the fiber surface characteristics. The effects of treatment conditions on the interface and mechanical properties were carefully analyzed. It is important to balance the performance of composites for application development.
