Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most common tumors and a major leadingcause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Althoughregular screening with mammography has been routinely appliedin clinical diagnosis for many years, the assessment of early breastcancer for prognosis and the prediction of treatment benefit remainsa challenge. Therefore, the detection of tumor biomarkers, includinggenetic and proteomic tumor markers, plays an important rolein the determination of prognosis and the individualization oftreatment strategies for breast cancer. There are many commercial kitsavailable that utilize enzyme and fluorescent substrates in the clinicaldiagnosis. However, these conventional approaches always have somedrawbacks, leading to the need of other new automated detections.Immunosensors, showing promise as alternatives, are already usedfor breast cancer screening. Application of immunosensors in cancertesting offers several distinct advantages over other clinical analyses.Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is one of the popular transducersamong the immunosensing approaches. Such optical transducers are extraordinarily useful for giving the targeted information in a simpleand fast manner in connection to analyzers. This chapter focuses onthe current developments in SPR biosensor technologies for breastcancer-associated biomarkers. It involves the fundamental principle, biomedical applications, and future challenges.
