Abstract

Color Doppler ultrasound is useful in differentiating benign and malignant liver tumor. Its usefulness in malignant biliary thrombus was rarely reported. A total of 12 patients (M/F: 7/5: ages ranged 43 to approximately 67 years) with liver malignant tumors and biliary invasion were studied with color Doppler ultrasound with 3.5 MHz convex probe (SSA-340 A, Toshiba, Japan). The pathological and/or cytological diagnoses of their liver tumors as well as biliary thrombi were hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in 8 patients, cholangiocarcinoma in 3 patients and gallbladder cancer in 1 patient. Color signal with pulsatile flow was detected from the biliary thrombi in 7 patients, including 6 patients with HCC and one with cholangiocarcimona. Color Doppler ultrasound may be useful in detection of blood flow from malignant biliary thrombus.
