Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to establish a preliminary computer assisted simulation of renal tumor cryosurgery .A radiologist and an urologist in a medical center in addition to the engineering specialist from the university participated in this interdisciplinary research program. The first step of this simulation protocol is to precisely build a three-dimensional model for each patient-oriented organ using hundreds of computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images by the software of Amira. Then, the volume mesh in tissue and tumor of different input conditions is formed by the integrated computer-aided engineering and manufacturing software (ICEM). Through the CFD-ACE+ solver, finally, the bioheat transfer model is modified and incorporated into the software program to fit the reality in thermal medicine. The three-dimensional transient temperature distribution can be thus calculated. This study can solve the difficulty between the medical imaging process and the solid modeling of engineering graphics. The simulation results for cryosurgery of renal tumors can provide a method of pre-procedural planning for practicing physicians to greatly improve the effectiveness of cryosurgery.
