Abstract
Human beings explore the relationship between humans and nature for linking them and pursuing the unity of function and aesthetics. Based on this kind of thought, the creation of “learning from nature” appears. In the past, creators usually focused on the form and function of the product, ignoring the inspiration from nature. Yet, the shape, sound and meaning of Chinese characters coincide with the shape, color and sound in nature, which accurately reflect the notion of “learning from nature”. Therefore, this study takes a basic design course as the research sample, which teaches students the methods of transforming Chinese characters into products. The design process was summarized into six types of transformation from Chinese characters to products. Through the course, this study found that: (1) The design process of the six categories of Chinese characters has an obvious effect on inspiring students’ creative thinking and can be improved with more design connotation. (2) The approach of transforming Chinese Characters into products has inherent value.
