Abstract

Humans have been pushed to change their communication interfaces and dissemination methods during this post-pandemic era. People are increasingly relying on digital-technology devices and reducing their various perceptions of tangible material experiences synchronously. However, this study aims to explore the receive, comprehension, expressions, and application of tactile perception derived from material experiences. The authors propose three sections of the research procedures for developing the haptic cognition model (HCM) by exploring material experience (MX) and haptic semantics (HS). Moreover, there are five stages during the HCM application procedures: (1) Understanding the material via the material experience, (2) Extracting haptic semantics derive from the material understanding, (3) Manifesting MX-to-HS design, (4) Evaluating by experts, (5) Reflecting by designers. Based on the theoretical foundation, this study invites young designers to participate in the empirical design project with the haptic topic. Eventually, this research clarifies how the material experience and haptic semantics can be applied to a cognition model and which relevant components are needed for a haptic cognition model.
