Abstract
With the advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT), the concept of smart healthcare has gradually evolved in the form of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). The combination of the IoMT with cloud computing, big data, and Artificial Intelligence transforms the conventional medical system in every possible way by making it more efficient, convenient, personalized, and affordable, especially for the elderly and patients with chronic diseases. The primary goal of this book chapter is to summarize the applications of the IoMT for both body-centric and object-centric applications in the medical field along with the identification of potential research issues and future directions. The chapter also focuses on the generic IoMT framework adopted by several researchers and the healthcare industries comprising layers for the data acquisition, transmission, computation, management, and analysis. Additionally, an extensive description of the effective advantages of IoMT in the healthcare paradigm is highlighted. Finally, the challenges and upcoming opportunities related to the complete adaptation of IoMT are emphasized in detail.
