Abstract

This paper focuses on the study of lap joints for amorphous cores, where the magnetic loss and noise related to lap-joint configurations are considered. Both the conventional step-lap (CSL) and a newly developed step-lap (NSL) are addressed, in which special emphasis is put on the underlying physical mechanisms in the step-lap number and overlap. The NSL core exhibits unique distribution of step-lap numbers and overlap alignment that will reduce the core sensitivity subject to the variations of magnetostriction. Finally, to investigate the performance of magnetic properties, a three-phase wound amorphous-cored transformer with capacity 1850 kVA is constructed. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed NSL core can provide better performance of lower core loss, exciting power, and noise than the conventional counterparts.
