Abstract

Segmental mandibular defects are reliably reconstructed with free osteocutaneous flaps today. Primary or sometimes secondary insertion of osseointegrated dental implants plays an important role in total rehabilitation. This article outlines the advantages of the fibula osteoseptocutaneous free flap with osseointegration teeth in mandibular reconstruction. Controversies regarding patient selection, timing of osseointegration, and the effect of radiation therapy on dental implants are discussed.
