Abstract

Merkel cell tumor is an unusual, distinctive, and aggressive malignancy of skin that was first described histologically in 1972 by Toker1 as trabecular carcinoma. Since then, most articles have described limited numbers of the tumors regarding ultrastructure and histogenesis under several names: Merkel cell tumor, Merkel cell carcinoma, neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin, skin APUDoma, primary small cell carcinoma of the skin, extrapulmonary carcinoma of the skin, and endocrine carcinoma of the skin.
