Polarized ring interferometer for linear birefringence measurement

Abstract

A polarized optical heterodyne ring interferometer is constructed to measure the linear birefringence (LB) of crystalline quartz in the geometry of a Soliel Babinet compensator. The optical common-path feature with respect to vertical (P) and horizontal (S) polarized waves of this setup implies the independence of the elliptical polarization of the incident P wave and S wave in LB measurement. In addition, the error analysis of the LB measurement based on phase retardation detection is discussed.
