Abstract

Mobile computing devices have become an integral part of modern life, but excessive use can cause visual discomfort and even eye injuries. This makes effective management of vision health increasingly important. Existing methods for assessing eye fatigue include the critical flicker fusion test and Heuer's 10-point scale questionnaire. However, both have notable drawbacks: the flicker fusion test requires bulky and expensive equipment, making it impractical for daily use, while the 10 point questionnaire relies on subjective responses, which reduces its accuracy and reliability for regular monitoring. To address these issues, we propose a novel method called the Ripple Test. In this test, users identify an icon with an animated waveform that moves in a different direction from a group of similar icons. By gradually shortening the wavelength of the wave patterns, we identify the maximum critical value, k, which reflects the user's visual perception threshold. By comparing the Ripple Test results with those from Heuer's questionnaire, we observe a correlation between eye fatigue and the critical value k. This method offers a simple and practical way to detect visual fatigue, providing a more accessible solution for personal visual health management.
