Abstract

A novel electroplating method of preparing palladium membrane on an AISI 316 porous stainless steel support is successfully developed by proper control of rotation speed of the substrate with current density. This use of low current density with high rotation speed enables us to avoid hydrogen adhesion during deposition and to prepare smooth thin surfaced membrane without pinhole defect. The electroplated composite palladium membrane shows excellent property in the hydrogen permeation, high flux and permselectivity, and is used in a membrane-assisted steam reformer of methanol for the production of high purity hydrogen. This electroplated palladium membrane appears to resist hydrogen embrittlement below the phase transition temperature of 280°C when it is exposed to 10 atmA hydrogen pressure from room temperature to 250°C and 350°C repeatedly for longer than 600 hours.
