Abstract

A resilient procedure (RP) is proposed that actively executes a single-version or multiversion procedure on several sites to provide high availability for a distributed computer system. The approach can also be used to improve performance. The syntax and structure of the RP are described. Design issues including multiversion software, RP resiliency, and heterogeneous environment are discussed. Also briefly described is an implementation of RP. Comparisons with other fault tolerance techniques are presented.
