Abstract

This paper presents a novel technique to increase the frequency range of voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), which consists of two complementary cross-coupled VCOs with switching grounded-plate inductor. By controlling the grounded points of metal plates underneath the inductor for the RC resonator, it could adjust the inductor coupling effect to improve tuning range of VCO than only a grounded plate underneath the inductor. The proposed technique has been demonstrated by a CMOS VCO circuit which is implemented in the 90 nm CMOS process, resulting in a tuning range from 13.2GHz to 14.8GHz. The output power is -10dBm, and phase noise is -108dBc@1MHz offset.
