Abstract

This study proposes an assistive system to improve the safety of mobility scooter users. The system autonomously detects potential dangers and avoids accidents using multi-sensors, a single-board computer and active control mechanisms. The working principle includes braking assistance and throttle limitation and the potential benefits of the proposed system are identified. A vector table is constructed by experiment to determine the appropriate distance in which to safely stop the mobility scooter to prevent a collision. The assistive mobility scooter system is tested in the real world to demonstrate its robustness and safety.
