Abstract

The authors describe the case of a 40-year-old woman with sequestered nodular goiter. A thyroid scan pattern showed nodular goiter and a functioning mass in the left lateral cervical area, but there was no significant concentration of I-131 between the mass and the thyroid gland. Sequestered nodular goiter, also called a lateral aberrant thyroid rest, is histologically benign thyroid tissue in the lateral cervical area and is entirely separated from the thyroid gland. This is a rare condition that occurs in older patients with colloid nodular goiter.
