Abstract
Gastric lipoma is a rare benign gastric submucosal tumor. Endoscopic
ultrasonography (EUS) is a tool used to evaluate gastric submucosal tumors. The
sonographic picture of a small gastric lipoma has been reported to be of a diffusely
homogenous, hyperechoic pattern. Herein is presented a case of a giant gastric lipoma
measuring 10×6×3 cm. Transabdominal ultrasonography (TAU) showed a well-defined
tumor originating from the gastric submucosal layer. Its homogenous hyperechoic
pattern showed some strong hyperechoic bands within the mass. EUS demonstrated a
clearer echo pattern than that obtained with TAU. These characteristic pictures
obtained by TAU and EUS led to the diagnosis of a giant gastric lipoma originating
from the submucosal layer. This was confirmed by computed tomography and magnetic
resonance imaging, and subsequently by histology.
