Abstract
This paper describes the technology development of heat pump water heater by presenting some experimental test data and discussing the advantages of its various designs. A heat pump water heater (HPWH) is an air-conditioning unit which besides pumping heat from the room to the outside environment, also heating water using its otherwise rejected heat. The variations of the design are mainly in three areas: (1) the arrangement between water-cooled and air-cooled heat exchangers, whether in serial or in parallel, (2) the different types of refrigerant/water heat exchanger, and (3) the hot water circulation and delivery.
