Abstract

A retrospective review of the stapling technique used for colorectal anastomoses in this hospital from 1987 to 1990 was reported. Experience with two single or double stapling techniques in 94 patients was analyzed to compare the difference in terms of intraoperative and postoperative complications. It was concluded that both allowed colorectal anastomoses to be performed with ease and safety. Few significant differences were found between these two stapling techniques when they were used for high colorectal anastomoses in sigmoid colon and upper rectal cancer. However, the double- stapling technique has increased the proportion of low colorectal anastomoses in lower rectal cancer, without disadvantage.
