Abstract
Ageing is a universal but complex biological process, characterised by an impairment of bioenergetic function, a decreased ability to respond to stress, and an increased risk of age-associated diseases. In this article, we review the role of mitochondria in the human ageing process from the point of view of the well-documented decline in respiratory function and the increase in mutation and oxidative damage to the mitochondrial DNA of ageing tissues.
