Abstract

This study demonstrates a significant improvement in the toughness of polylactide (PLA) by its blending with pre-heat processed natural rubber (NR). With as little as 1 wt% NR, the tensile toughness was dramatically improved over that of neat PLA without loss in tensile modulus and stress. With 20 wt% NR, samples did not break in the notched Charpy impact test.
