Abstract

Ultra-short pulse compression for tunable mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers is demonstrated by utilizing a 1-μm-diameter tapered fiber with grating pairs. For 100 fs input pulses at the 880-nm center wavelength, the optical bandwidth is broaden from 14 nm to 45 nm after propagating through the 1-cm long tapered fiber. After passing through the grating pairs with 1.6 cm separation, the final pulse width is compressed down to 33 fs.
